Waking Down in Mutuality

Waking Down in Mutuality (also known as WDM or Waking Down) is a set of spiritual teachings and a community that describes itself as living and supporting spiritual awakenings that are integrated into ordinary human life.〔("Welcome" by CC Leigh )〕
Waking Down was originally founded by Saniel Bonder in the early 1990s after (and partially as a reaction to) his 20 years of work with his former guru, Adi Da Samraj.〔Bonder, Saniel (1998), Waking Down p. 7〕 While acknowledging the necessity of some amount of hierarchy for the functioning of any organization and having a body of recognized teachers,〔Bonder Saniel (2002), Sure Fire pp. 38-39〕 WDM describes its work as decidedly aspirant (or participant) centered rather than teacher, guru, or organization centered.〔Bonder, Saniel The Human Sun Seminar, Fifth gateway (2000)〕〔Khalsa, Sat Puran Singh (2008) Journey into Spiritual Maturity: A Thematic Analysis of Transpersonal Development pp. 104-105〕
Organizationally, Waking Down in Mutuality presently consists of a non-profit association of autonomous teachers, The Waking Down Teachers Association, and an educational non-profit for the training of teachers and outreach, The Institute of Awakened Mutuality.〔( "About Waking Down in Mutuality" )〕 Waking Down teachers do their work mostly in the form of "sittings" (interactive gatherings), private sessions between teachers and students, and workshops which are taught either by a single teacher or by multiple teachers working together.〔("History of Waking Down in Mutuality" )〕
Its teachings on spiritual awakening claim to be similar but not identical to such eastern traditions as Zen and Advaita Vedanta in that it is founded on the conviction of the reality of non-dual consciousness.〔Bonder, Saniel (1998), The Conscious Principle pp. 52-53〕 According to Waking Down, awakening to the fact that one is not exclusively one's human nature makes it possible to work with oneself on the human level more effectively.〔Ardagh, Arjuna (2005), The Translucent Revolution pp. 84-85〕 For this reason WDM also encourages an embrace of the passionate and human sides of life referred to as "Down". As such it has more in common with the tantric traditions of India.〔Bonder, Saniel (1998), The White Hot Yoga of the Heart p. 143〕 The paradoxical embrace of both the worldly and spiritual dimensions of life, and the attention it brings to conscious mutual relationships, is considered central to the Waking Down teaching.〔Bonder, Saniel (1998), Waking Down p. 70〕
